You may have heard that flowers have a language of their own. Most people don’t know this when they choose to send a bouquet but maybe the choice is subliminally connected.
Whatever the individual meanings of specific blooms, flowers, in general, have an indelible connection to love. Flowers appear as motifs and patterns on many tokens associated with love so it was an organic progression that led to flower patterns being used in jewelry.
If there is one piece of jewelry that truly demonstrates the connection between flowers and love, it is the floral engagement ring and floral-inspired engagement rings.
What Are Flower Engagement Rings?
Floral engagement rings offer an alternative to single stone rings. They are a type of cluster ring where instead of a stand-alone single center diamond or another type of gemstone, a large center stone is surrounded by several smaller diamonds arranged in a pattern to resemble a flower.
The style is known as a “halo ring”. Halo settings can be a single or double halo and all types of diamond shapes can be used in a halo setting. In a floral halo engagement ring, the center stone is usually round simply because in nature there are limited examples of flowers that are other than circular.
Drawing on the appearance of naturally-occurring flowers, floral engagement rings have a distinctive, classic look. The arrangement of smaller stones around the center stone can make the center stone feel and look larger than it is. They also stand out in a crowd because the smaller stones add noticeable sparkle and luminescence.
Reasons to Choose a Flower Engagement Ring
Most women usually choose a diamond engagement ring but are less specific about the design. They may not have a choice if the ring is purchased as a surprise by their partner. If the engagement ring is a joint decision, unless the bride-to-be has an idea in mind of what they want, the choice is usually made on seeing something that is liked more than anything else.
People are drawn to ring styles for many different reasons. They might love the simplicity of a solitaire diamond. A solitaire doesn’t always have to be a round brilliant.
Other people are drawn to multicolor rings. The diamond and blue sapphire ring that Prince Charles presented to Lady Diana Spencer is still one of the most popular engagement ring settings and is much copied.
Another area that gains attention is antique and vintage engagement rings. Unless you go to bespoke jewelers to have a ring designed to your spec, the best way to source a unique engagement ring is in the secondhand market.
So where do floral engagement rings fit into this inspiration?
A floral-inspired engagement ring sings romance. They are chic and feminine and encompass all styles from antique – Victorian and Edwardian- through to Art Deco, vintage and modern. They can be very delicate or bold in style so there is an appeal to many.
Referring back to the earlier statement about the language of flowers, certain types of flower engagement rings hold a special message. For example, a rose engagement ring is a symbol of love and passion while a daisy-inspired ring denotes innocence.
Extra details might be included that add to the story of the engaged couple such as clusters of leaves or scrolls of vines. Another interesting design feature is to include the bride-to-be’s birthstone as the center stone or in the smaller stones.
There is a little limitation in the design of flower engagement rings. Other than needing to evoke the idea of a flower, floral-inspired engagement rings can be made in every precious metal including yellow gold, white gold, rose gold, and platinum. The center stone of the floral design can be any gemstone, not just a round diamond.
Another reason to choose a floral setting for an engagement ring, especially in a halo diamond ring, is that the design usually makes the center stone look bigger than it is. The most expensive part of a ring is usually the center stone and rings with a floral setting are less expensive than rings of an equivalent size set with a solitaire stone. You don’t get a larger stone — just a setting that looks larger.
Floral engagement rings are easy to match to most wedding rings without stacking issues. Although they look great with a diamond band, they, however, almost always look better with a plain wedding band in a precious metal of the same color to not diminish the stunning effect of the floral design.
You might ask if there are any downsides to a flower engagement ring. There are, but they are quite minor. Because it is a cluster of stones, the ring can take longer to clean than solitaire rings. Delicate setting styles like micro-pave and pave settings may require extra caution and care, although generally and with usual wear, bezels and prongs in fine jewelry should not become loose.
